Environmental Determinism vs. Social Dynamics: Prehistorical and Historical Examples

چکیده
Environmental determinism is often used to explain past social collapses and predict the future of modern human societies. We assess availability natural resources resulting carrying capacity (a basic concept environmental determinism) through a toy model based on Hurst–Kolmogorov dynamics. also highlight role cohesion, we evaluate it from an entropic viewpoint. Furthermore, make case that, when comes demise civilizations, while influences may be in mix, dynamics main driver behind their decline eventual collapse. examine several prehistorical historical cases civilization collapse, most characteristic being that Minoan civilization, whose disappearance c. 1100 BC has fostered causative hypotheses. In general, note these hypotheses are catastrophic causes, which nevertheless occurred few hundred years before collapse Minoans. Specifically, around 1500 BC, Minoans managed overpass many adversities. As have not found justified reasons for (around BC), hypothesize possible transformation Minoans’ structure as cause

Genetic diversity of allozymes at 24 loci was studied in 23 populations of longleaf pine (Pinus pa/u.stris Mill.). including three seed orchard populations and an old-growth stand. Overall, the mean number of alleles per polymorphic locus was 2.9, the percentage of polymorphic loci was 92%. and the mean expected heterozygosity was 0.105. These values are comparable with diversity measures found...
متن کاملSocial and Ethical Responsibility against Social Determinism
Background: Because of the highlighted role of ethical responsibility in social and individual life, it is looked as an important issue in ethics area. Social responsibility that is defined as a sub-factor of ethical responsibility will have such an important place. What is discussed in responsibility discussions commonly is the “human will”. Responsibility is more based on the free will. In th...
متن کاملStrong Determinism vs . Computability ∗
Are minds subject to laws of physics? Are the laws of physics computable? Are conscious thought processes computable? Currently there is little agreement as to what are the right answers to these questions. Penrose ([41], p. 644) goes one step further and asserts that: a radical new theory is indeed needed, and I am suggesting, moreover, that this theory, when it is found, will be of an essenti...

متن کاملNon-Determinism and the Dynamics of Knowledge
In this paper we attempt to shed light on the concept of an agent’s knowledge after a non-deterministic action is executed. We start by making a comparison between notions of non-deterministic choice, and between notions of sequential composition, of settings with dynamic and/or epistemic character; namely Propositional Dynamic Logic (PDL), Dynamic Epistemic Logic (DEL), and the more recent log...
